Background of the Study
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play a critical role in the education sector in Nigeria, particularly in areas where government intervention is limited. These organizations often provide funding and support for educational initiatives, including building schools, offering scholarships, and implementing literacy programs. Many of these NGOs rely heavily on donor funding from international organizations, foundations, and government agencies to carry out their activities (Eze & Iwu, 2023).
Donor funding is essential in supporting the operations of NGOs, but it also brings with it the need for accountability and transparency. Donors require that organizations demonstrate responsible financial management to ensure that funds are used for their intended purposes. The influence of donor funding on the accountability of NGOs is significant, as it dictates how funds are managed, reported, and utilized in education-related projects.
This study will explore how donor funding influences the accountability of NGOs in Lagos State, focusing on educational NGOs. It aims to assess how donor expectations shape financial reporting practices, governance structures, and project outcomes. Additionally, the research will examine the challenges NGOs face in maintaining accountability in the management of donor funds.
Statement of the Problem
Non-governmental organizations in Lagos State, especially those working in the education sector, depend on donor funding to carry out their activities. However, the effectiveness of these organizations in maintaining financial accountability has been a subject of concern. Many NGOs face difficulties in ensuring that donor funds are properly managed, reported, and utilized in a transparent manner. Instances of fund mismanagement, delayed reporting, and inefficiencies in fund utilization have raised questions about the true impact of donor funding on the accountability of these organizations.
There is limited research on how donor funding specifically influences the accountability of education-focused NGOs in Lagos State. This study aims to bridge this gap by examining the relationship between donor funding and accountability in the operations of these NGOs.
